The SS Central America was a steamer ship operating between the U.S. & Central America. The ship sank September of 1857, with 425 of 578 lives lost. It was heavily loaded with 30,000 lbs of gold prospected during the California Gold Rush. At the time, the gold aboard was valued at $8 million; about $292 million at todays gold price ($1,000 per oz). The great loss of gold contributed to the Panic of 1857.
