Very scarce and Hard to find war time Gendaito Signed ???? (MIYAIRI AKIHIRA) Miyairi Akihira was the 2nd Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho, 1963)The word "scarce" is used because, being such a perfectionist, he worked very slowly in comparison to his fellow smiths and thus didn't make all that many blades during the 2nd world war, when this blade was actually forged. As a matter of fact he served as an example by the authorities for the time needed to forge a sword and we "owe" it to him that today Japanese katana kaji are not allowed to forge more than 2 katana size swords per month.Miyairi Akihira (March 17, 1913 - November 24, 1977) was born in Sakaki, Nagano. He entered the Nihonto Tanren Denshusho of Kurihara Akihide in 1937 at the age of 10 years old. He won numerous awards during his life, including five consecutive "Tokusho" in Shinsakuto Gijyutsu Hatpyoukai from 1956 to 1959. In 1960, he became a Mukansa and subsequently the second (2nd) living national treasure in 1963. He founded the Miyairi School and is regarded as one of the best and most popular swordsmiths in 20th century Japan. This high quality blade's nagasa is a bit over 28" in length, while the total length of the sword is about 40".Overall it is very well cared for (as you can see for yourself from the photos) and in truly excellent condition, as it should be.
