Extremely Rare Fossil Ice Age American Elk Skeleton - $400,000 - (Lehi, UT)
Available: A spectacular mounted fossil skeleton of a giant deer or elk from the Ice Age of North America, Cervalces americanus The huge antler rack is the most extravagantly branched of all the deer family both living and extinct. Both in volume and surface area it rivals in size its European ice age cousin the Irish elk, Megaloceros giganteus. In all probability, this specimen represents the largest and most complicated branched antler rack in the western hemisphere—“The ultimate trophy”. The magnificent skull is virtually complete and preserved with major portions of the antlers intact; allowing for the complex asymmetry and extravagant arrangement to be appreciated. The antlers have a full width of 6' 2" and form unusual long flat, wing-like tines. They bifurcate anteriorly and posteriorly rising 3 feet above the skull forming large, palmatted, and bifurcarted branches similar to that of the caribou(reindeer). The full skeleton is articulated in a standing pose on a wooden base and modular, allowing for easy disassembly and reassembly. The specimen is displayed in two separate mounts. Due to the weight of the massive antlers, the articulatedskeleton is mounted with a cast reproduction of the skull and antlers. The original skull and antlers are beautifully mounted on a custom made metal base. Of all the great mega fauna (mammoths, saber tooth cats, ground sloths etc.) of the last glacial age, Cervalces is the rarest. This present skeleton is ~70% of the original bone with about 30% restored . This, therefore, represents a rare opportunity to acquire a prestigious national treasure for a museum, gallery, mall, business, or personal space. This exceedingly rare fossil was discovered in 1973 in glacial deposits in Colombia, New Jersey. Today, it resides in Utah--on loan to the Museum of Ancient Life in Lehi. Full documentation for this specimen forms part of the offering and includes photos, field diary, site maps, correspondence with other museums, carbon 1
