PETER CHITRY SILVER TEA TRAY c1820 NEW YORK "MADE FOR JONES FAMILY" 179 OZ. An important c1820 Jones family silver presentation tea serving tray. Crafted by the New York silversmiths Peter Chitry and Maltby Pelletreau. Both worked in New York City, mostly during the first quarter 19th century. Chitry worked for a short while with the Forbes family of silversmiths, and Pelletreau part of the group who crafted the Grand Canal celebration medals. This tray appears to be a commissioned work by Chitry and Pelletreau in collaboration for the Jones family. Raised rectangular with rounded corner and raised shell leaf and floral rim. Center with Jones family arms and presentations dating 1823 and a second 1884, indicating the tray was passed down in the Jones family. Shell crown, leafy rolling vine handles. Atop cast winged shell flower center leaf and scroll tip feet. This important c1820 Jones family presentation tea tray is 29 inches across handles and 17 across and weighs 179 (standard) ounces. Hallmarked as shown both Peter Chitry and Maltby Pelletreau. In very fine condition. Appears little used. Rich sterling patina. Retains original detail. Mild surface wear to center. Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax.
