"LAZY MORNING" by Thomas Hart Benton A 10 x 13 1/2 (135 sq. inch image size) Charcoal Drawing on White Paper depicting a sharecropper's cabin during the growing season. That gnarled old Oak tree clearly predates the home that seems located there solely to access the comfort of its shade on hot summer days. The three figures and the bench under the tree highlight the importance of that one tree in the lives of those living there. This is a Carolina scene. The sandy soil suggests that it is either on the South Carolina lowlands or in extreme eastern North Carolina where Benton is known to have visited and produced drawings in the 1934 time period. The drawing is signed and dated 1934-- placing it at the absolute height of Benton's important Regionalist Middle Period (1925-1950). This is as fine a Regionalist drawing as can be found. The image is strong on the paper and easily carries across any room in which it is displayed. It is drawn in either charcoal or in a strong charcoal-like medium, and is well-fixed on the paper. Middle Period farm scenes are the epitome of what is sought in Benton's oeuvre and this is an exceptionally fine example since it depicts those that produced the crops essential to society. The drawing is included in the book, "Benton Drawings: A Collection of Drawings by Thomas Hart Benton" University of Missouri Press, Columbia, 1968 on page 87. "Lazy Morning" was purchased directly from the artist in the early '70s and comes with a Bill of Sale signed by the artist.
