OLD Guatemalan Hand Carved Wooden Dance Mask "The Mexican" Danze de la Mexicanos - $6,500 - (Red Bluff, CA)
Authentic OLD Guatemalan Dance Mask. This mask depicts "the Mexican" from Danze de la Mexicanos" (Dance of the Mexicans). This is one of the more popular and often performed Guatemalan dances. My understanding suggests this dance was introduced in Guatemala in the early 1800's. It seems it was a good natured poke at Guatemala's neighbors to the north. The mustache and LARGE nose were two of the attributes often depicted in these masks. There appear to be layers of paint. There are cracks in the paint, as well as paint loss. It seems this mask was worn many times (danced). The wood has been darkened were it would come in contact with the wearer's face. SEE PICTURES. The glass eyes are missing. This is fairly common with these old masks. Carvings are deep and extremely well done. Open mouth with upper teeth exposed. Some wear to wood noted. (primarily on right side of mustache) SEE PICTURES. Measures 8 1/2" tall by 6 3/4" wide (ear to ear). Please ask questions before purchasing. FREE Shipping INCLUDES Insurance and Tracking.
