1942 PDS Treasury Issued Double Mint Set ANACS Certified And OSV Verified - $35,000 - (Morrison, CO)

From 1939 to 1946 the U.S. Treasury issued double mint sets and mailed them in these sealed canvas bags. There are only 3 sealed sets still known to exist: 1943, 1944, and 1946. From the sets that have been opened, a 1942 and a 1945, we know the coins were placed into 2 paper bank wrappers. A letter from the Treasury is also included inside the bag detailing their order. From 1939 to 1945 sets were issued in the 100's. However in 1946 the Treasury announced in The Numismatist for the first time that sets could be ordered. As a result several thousand sets were ordered in 1946 and beginning in 1947 the Treasury had to find a new way to package and ship the coins, thus the birth of the double mint sets in boards and envelopes as we know them today. For more on the history of double mint sets visit OSV. Expert This is the 1942 set from the Paul estate that had been opened. The boards have composite grades or scores as 65.40, 66.47, and 64.73. The uniqueness of the sets is more important both historically and numerically than actual grades. Also verified and sealed are the paper wrappers, canvas bag, and original mailing label from the Treasury. This 1942 set is the only one currently known to exist from that year.
