D. Eggarts & sons, 223 Pearl St. New York, mid 1800s - $3,960 - (Boulder, CO)
An excellent chronometer of the mid 1800s marketed by D. Eggerts and Sons of New York, well known merchants of nautical goods of the period and as was in a many cases the chronometers sold were made in England as well as the US and some instances the English chronometers may or may not have had his name on them, those that had name on them were known as contract chronometers. This chronometer is original to the box, the top is beautiful replacement as the tops were frequently taken off for convenience of observation and latter misplaced and separated from the chronometer. This chronometer has been overhauled to the best standards of the industry, a $800 value and may be run 24 – 7 indefinitely, it would still have to be rated as to gain or loss per day which would be added to a rate sheet and projected over a long period of time as to the time on the chronometer on any given day compensated to actual time for navigation. As can be seen there are few spots on the dial, original lacquer and silver, original lacquer on the case and all brass parts. This chronometer was almost certainly deacquisioned from the English Navy in the early 1960s when it came to the US. There little doubt that it saw action in WW 11 as evidenced by the standard WW 11 placard inside the case as to shipping instructions. Detent is original and perfect.
